x86 Cores Physical Design Co-op

 

LOCATION: Santa Clara, CA

 

ONSITE: This role requires the student to work from the Santa Clara office throughout the duration of the Co-op/Intern term. First time Co-ops/Interns should work full-time and onsite.

 

PROGRAM TERM:

  • Fall: Start Date August 19, 2024 – December 13, 2024

The Role

The AMD Silicon Valley Cores Design Team is seeking a student to take ownership of physical design systems responsible for driving success within a next generation Zen CPU core for future iterations of Epyc™ servers and Ryzen™ desktop/notebook computers.  The student will have opportunities to directly collaborate with experts across various aspects of the CPU design flow, from RTL design to tape-out in the most advanced process nodes.  The student will work with the most experienced expert to investigate, develop, and deploy new techniques for creating high speed and low power logic designs.

 

What you’ll be doing

  • Utilize computer hardware, computer architecture, and digital systems concepts to design and build new CPU design – including engagement with a variety of engineer users
  • Expand CPU physical design knowledge with hands-on on construction of the Synthesis, Place and Route flow using latest industrial tools.
  • Apply backend knowledge in collaboration with design experts to fix electrical issues including noise, Electron Migration, IR.

 

What you’ll learn

  • A big picture understanding of CPU design at multiple levels including -
    • experience in the process of bringing up a high-performance CPU, likely at various stages of development
    • insight into various domains of high speed and low power logic design through direct collaboration with design experts
    • understanding of how designs in development are linked to existing and future unannounced products that drive AMD’s overall strategy
  • An extensive network of peers across various expertise and at several AMD sites; many opportunities to seek advice in developing your future career
  • Experience in hardware design system ownership typically reserved for senior engineers – and the task management and communication skills associated with such a role

 

Requirements

  • Basic electrical engineering principles
  • VLSI circuit design
  • High speed logic design and synthesis 
  • Tool-driven place and route
  • Verilog
  • Low power design techniques
  • Gate-level design/verification
  • Timing analysis and optimization
  • Electrical reliability analysis and physical design
  • Experience with tool scripting (e.g. Python/TCL)
