About this opportunity:

The Producer/Director position plays a vital role in university support from University Media Services. The P/D acts as project manager for the larger productions that UMS puts together, shoots footage, edits, and oversees all aspects of that project. The P/D also manages the Production Assistants that are working on the project, as well as students. This position provides critical oversight and ensures deadlines are met, production standards are adhered to, and supporting staff and students are provided an opportunity to learn and add to their skill sets. The P/D also supports Ball State Public Media and is responsible for producing content for their use. This position supports the ESPN initiative when students and other staff are unavailable, and produces and/or directs live events such as Commencement, Nurse Pinning ceremonies, Welcome Week events, Homecoming student competitions, and other university events. P/Ds also coordinate with faculty to provide dynamic elements to coursework. P/Ds are experienced professionals who are able to mentor students in advanced production techniques, while giving constructive criticism and feedback, real-world insight, and advice to help round out the students’ education.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function: Plan, design, produce, and direct instructional, promotional, broadcast and corporate programs for University Media Services.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Serve as project manager that is responsible for preliminary project assessment, creation of a project’s financial and resource budgets, and creation of a project team in conjunction with the Production Manager.

2. Follow up on production tasks and report the project’s status and progress through the utilization of computer software that tracks resources, financial commitments, and billing statistics of UMS production projects.

3. Consult with UMS associates and other production staff, university faculty, staff and administrators, and corporate clients to design and implement media programs from concept to completion, which includes developing budgets (finances and resources), creating project timelines, communicating and coordinating project activities, directing or supporting on-location and studio crews, traveling when necessary, conducting computer based post production duties such as editing and sound mixing which incorporate digital effects and digital audio, maintaining a comprehensive log of all work related to specifically assigned projects, and performing post project evaluations.

4. Act as Director and/or Producer for live and live-to-tape events, on location and in-studio, delivered to broadcast or streaming platforms.

5. Coordinate the recording of footage on location and in-studio, as camera operator, lighting director, audio director, and/or other functions to meet the needs of the project.

6. Meet with corporate clients while working on projects through UMS Corporate Services to establish working budgets and to establish professional working relationships with those clients.

7. Identify and learn new and emerging technologies to enhance the production of direct instructional, promotional, broadcast, and corporate programs for University Media Services.

8. Develop, maintain, and assist colleagues with technical knowledge in an environment marked by constantly and rapidly changing technology.

9. Supervise students, the number of which is dependent upon the individual project; supervise other Producer/Directors and production staff dependent upon the scope of the project.

10. Serve as a mentor for UMS projects, including adherence to approved project outlines, budgets, purchases, production schedules, and final approvals of finished project; monitor progress on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule; seek approval for changes, additions, or revisions to project; set-up criteria to monitor status, approve final scripts, and be present during asset acquisition and post-production; follow all university policies for the recommendation and approval for all purchases, travel, and associated paperwork for the Production Manager; serve as the mentor and producer for the assigned projects with the quality of these projects being reviewed and judged by the Production Manager.

11. Provide production leadership for all projects; coordinate and schedule facilities, staff, and volunteers; oversee the documentation and display of items to be sold, sponsor boards, and keys.

12. Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least two years of experience in audio/video production, computerized editing, camera operations, script writing, electronic graphics, and lighting.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in telecommunications or related field.
  • Experience in non-linear editing, such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro; three years of experience in computerized editing, camera operations, script writing, electronic graphics, and lighting.
